Buildings represent approximately one-fifth of Washington’s greenhouse gas emissions with the greatest proportion coming from direct combustion of natural gas and other fossil fuels in buildings for space heating, water heating and cooking. This chapter of the Washington 2021 State Energy Strategy recommends policies and actions required to implement an electrification strategy in Washington buildings. A buildings electrification strategy presents a suite of opportunities and challenges to help the state meet its energy and emissions reductions goals by 2030 and 2050.
