NEEP published a new market assessment today that shows a strong and growing market for high-performing air source heat pump (ASHP) equipment in the Northeast.
Air source heat pump sales across New England and New York have grown 250 percent over an eight-year period. Across the broader Northeast region (New England and Mid-Atlantic states), the report estimates that ASHPs represent 32 percent of the residential HVAC equipment market (market includes annual sales of ASHPs, furnaces, boilers, and central air-conditioners). Factors driving recent growth include expansion of energy efficiency programs and shifts in state-level policies.
While progress has been made, the region must double down on that progress to meet a 65 percent market penetration goal by 2030 to which most states in the region have committed. The region can leverage its existing infrastructure to grow the market even further. NEEP also published a series of best practice guides to address the most vexing barriers to wider adoption of high-performing heating and cooling equipment. These guides provide effective strategies on mid-stream program design and implementation, workforce development, and co-promotion of weatherization with heat pump technologies.
