This dashboard showcases the data from the 2020 U.S. Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), conducted by the Energy Information Agency (EIA). This is a state-level building characteristics survey that draws on information from over 18,500 respondents across the country. Explore key indicators across our dashboard pages, such as all-electric homes, heat pump deployments, state home heating mix, cooking range and water heater stats, and more.

Methodology

The U.S. Energy Information Administration conducts studies of the country’s commercial and residential building stock using a representative sample survey of buildings combined with data from energy suppliers. Atlas relies on the publicly available microdata from the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) from EIA, to construct the Residential Building Characteristics dashboard.

The primary unit for this dashboard, as understood from the 2020 RECS 2020, is “homes” or “housing unit.” A housing unit/home could be a single-family attached or detached home, an apartment unit, or a mobile home.

The dashboard is interactive by default and allows the user to hover over elements to see more details, click on segments of a chart to cross-filter other charts in the same section, and drill down into areas of interest in certain visuals. Additionally, there is a yellow filter bar on the right side of the dashboard. This allows the user to filter the visuals to view specific information of interest. If in doubt, indicative text on the top of every visual informs the user what data they are looking at below (a specific state, region, or national data). Likewise, to filter a single visual on a page (e.g., heat pump deployment and space heating mix), you can click on the map to filter that specific visual for a single state. Always check the indicative headers and your filters to see what data you are viewing.

To drill through to a specific data view, right-click on a data bar of your choice, select “horizontal drill through,” and click “geographic.” Likewise, to filter an entire page for a single state, select that state through the yellow filter bar on the right. Indicative text on the top of visuals relays what data you are looking at (state, national, regional).

Feel free to explore the dashboard and click around. You can always go back to the default view by clicking the “Reset Filters” button on the top right of each page.

Yes. Hover over a visual and click on the three horizontal dots on the top right corner. Then select “Export data.”
