The Atlas Buildings Hub Spotlight States Dashboard currently surfaces passed legislation relating to building decarbonization and electrification out of 29 states and the District of Columbia. Further, data is collected for the largest investor-owned utilities in each state and DC, to encapsulate more than 50 percent of the region’s coverage.

Today, the Spotlight States dashboard is undergoing an update of its policy categories and subcategories, to create more granularity in users’ filtering and increased policy specificity. These new categories are detailed in Table 1. They are described as map categories given their presentation on the dashboard on a physical map of the United States.

Overall, these 12 categories streamline policy classification to their underlying type of mechanism for change. Increased specificity is offered by the policy subcategories, which describe the policy focus of a particular policy mechanism (Table 2). Altogether, there are 35 policy subcategories, the majority of which are applicable to several policy categories.

With this update to the Spotlight States dashboard, users will be able to filter more narrowly to suit their interests. For instance, filtering to the policy subcategory “Preemption Policy” would display all passed and proposed preemption policies nationwide, with information including state, policy number, policy name, policy description, and when it was enacted. As a result, users will be able to more granularly explore state and utility policy trends at the state level.

In the coming months, the Spotlight States dashboard will see an overhaul to ensure the data and to make the features more consistent with other dashboards on Buildings Hub. In the meantime, we welcome your feedback on the dashboard. If there are ways the Spotlight States dashboard could be better serving your needs, please contact us at info@atlasbuildingshubs.com and we will do our best to accommodate your requests.
