SUMMARY:Cracking the Code: Unlocking the Benefits of Off-site Construction
DESCRIPTION:Industrialized construction practices\, such as off-site manufacturing\, have demonstrated an ability to reduce build times\, lower costs\, improve quality and performance\, reduce environmental impact\, create safer working environments\, and increase overall construction productivity. Although this practice is far from new\, challenges persist around code fragmentation\, state and local inspections\, and general education. In this session\, we will hear about how DOE is supporting this practice through the Advanced Building Construction Initiative\, the development of new off-site construction standards\, and how manufacturers are finding creative ways to streamline code compliance.

SUMMARY:Existing Building Decarbonization Code: The Gamechanger We Need Right Now in the Climate Fight
DESCRIPTION:The vast majority of buildings that we will use in the coming decades are already built and account for roughly 39% of the carbon footprint as well as other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We cannot address our climate crisis without tackling improved efficiency and electrification of existing buildings. But how? This session will feature presenters who are advancing codes and policies that will effectively decarbonize existing buildings and bring us the scale we seek. New Buildings Institute will share a new resource\, the recently released Existing Buildings Decarbonization Code\, to help jurisdictions set clear and approachable pathways to cut carbon emissions through existing building codes. This tool presents language that acts as an overlay to the 2021 International Efficiency Conservation Code (IECC) and details the measures needed for cutting emissions from the current building stock. A representative from the City and County of Denver will present examples of decarbonization policies at a jurisdictional scale including the use of building performance standards and zero energy policies.

SUMMARY:Energy Code Implementation: Insights from the Field to the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:With the rollout of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA)\, opportunities to improve energy code implementation across the country are top of mind. Although $225 million is earmarked to support creative implementation efforts\, it's often helpful to better understand compliance trends and learn from successful education and training efforts. In this session\, speakers will highlight new research on residential compliance pathway preferences\, demonstrate a new tool to gauge code compliance challenges and opportunities in states across the U.S. and discuss energy code education and training best practices.

SUMMARY:Taking Advantage of Federal Funds: Local Energy Efficiency Policies and Programs to Consider
DESCRIPTION:With the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act\, local governments have an opportunity to take advantage of new federal funding to advance energy efficiency policies and programs in their communities. Using the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s (ACEEE) Ready to Go Toolkit and Mayor’s Toolkit\, this webinar will outline leading energy efficiency programs that communities can learn from and consider replicating as they think about leveraging federal funding. ACEEE will highlight examples of high-impact local energy efficiency programs that promote building energy efficiency\, transportation efficiency\, and energy equity. Attendees will also hear highlights of how local governments can use funding to reduce energy burdens for low-income households.

SUMMARY:Built Green Conference 2022: Becoming the Change
DESCRIPTION:The Built Green Conference has been occurring annually for over a decade\, with the aim of providing valuable and cutting-edge information on green building and sustainability. \nThis year’s conference theme is Becoming the Change. These past few years have been filled with crises\, changes\, and unpredictable events that have created challenges for many homebuilders. Given unforeseen circumstances\, builders have had to learn to adapt and build resiliency in their businesses\, designs\, and processes. Businesses have also had to develop strategies to recruit and retain a rapidly evolving workforce. Speakers and participants will have the opportunity to share how they have become one of those changes and thrived. Collectively\, our small steps in transitioning building practices to address climate change have made big impacts.

SUMMARY:Energy Codes and Utility Programs: The Peanut Butter & Jelly of Energy Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Energy codes raise the proverbial energy efficiency floor while typical utility investments support programs well above code. However\, this dynamic has changed considerably; creative energy code claimed savings programs have emerged as a win\, win\, win solution\, helping utilities achieve their goals\, jurisdictions address climate change\, and consumers save on their energy bills. This session will explore the intersection of codes and utility programs by highlighting current best practices and opportunities for the future.

SUMMARY:Buildings Hub Live: The Future of the Electric Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Buildings Hub Live spotlights the changemakers and technologies leading the charge to electrify the built environment. Join Atlas Public Policy for Episode 2 on Wednesday\, August 31 at 2 PM EST. We have the pleasure of hosting Noah Cordoba\, Program Coordinator for Kitchen Electrification at the Building Decarbonization Coalition\, and Ram Narayanamurthy\, Program Manager with the Emerging Technologies Office at the U.S. Department of Energy\, to discuss the the future of the electric kitchen and the transition to induction cooktops. \nWhile many home and commercial chefs believe gas stoves to be superior than their electric counterparts\, that perception will need to change as the United States transitions to all-electric buildings. Traditional electric cooking\, either coil tops or ceramic glassware\, represent the vast majority of electric cooking appliances across U.S. households. However\, a safer\, higher-performing\, more efficient option\, induction cooking\, is emerging as the future of the electric kitchen. Induction makes use of electromagnetism to heat iron/steel pots and pans\, which allows the cooking surface to remain cool to the touch even when fully engaged. Induction stoves can boil water faster than any alternative\, including gas\, and they generate zero indoor air pollution and pose zero fire risks. With the right policy support and increased awareness\, it’s only a matter of time before induction cooking comes to a kitchen near you.
