SUMMARY:Buildings Hub Live: Building Decarbonization in the Midwest
DESCRIPTION:As of 2020\, only 20 percent of households in the Midwest used electricity for primary space heating\, and it is the region most dependent on piped gas and propane for home heating. Likewise\, only 14 percent of regional households are all-electric\, and just about 5 percent of homes report having a primary heat pump. \nWhat opportunities exist to decarbonize and electrify the Midwest and facilitate efficiency gains across the region. Which states are leading the charge to electrify the built environment\, and what should we expect from policymakers across region going forward? How might the injection of federal climate funding turn the tide and move the needle on Midwest electrification? Join Atlas Policy Analyst Zack Strauss\, Molly Graham from the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance\, and Dr. Missy Stults from the City of Ann Arbor\, Michigan to find out!

SUMMARY:First Public Workshop on California’s Approach under U.S. EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program
DESCRIPTION:The California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) invite you to participate in the First Public Workshop on California’s Approach under U.S. EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) Program. At this workshop\, CalEPA\, CARB and several other State agencies will discuss California’s ongoing work under the CPRG Program\, in which the State will deliver to U.S. EPA three climate plans over four years. Several State agencies will highlight existing climate plans\, actions\, and priorities that will greatly inform California’s CPRG deliverables. \nCreated under the Inflation Reduction Act\, U.S. EPA’s CPRG Program offers States\, large metropolitan areas\, and tribal nations non-competitive funding to create climate plans. The climate actions listed in the first plan will be eligible to compete for $4.6 Billion in federal funding under the second phase of the CPRG Program. Given California’s substantial existing climate plans\, such as the 2022 Scoping Plan Update\, and the number of climate stakeholders statewide\, California’s CPRG workplan focuses on coordination across State and local stakeholders\, the public\, low-income and disadvantaged communities\, and with tribal nations. It aims to maximize greenhouse gas reductions as well as air quality and equity-related benefits. \nThis is the first public workshop on California’s approach under the CPRG Program. In the Fall\, California will host in-person listening sessions to gather more detailed input on specific climate actions to include in CPRG deliverables\, particularly those that will be eligible for later implementation funding. This initial workshop is meant to gather interested stakeholders and prepare them to offer more in-depth feedback as California’s CPRG work unfolds. \nThe workshop agenda and staff presentations will be posted on California’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program webpage. \nAll interested stakeholders are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:Enabling faster installations Part II: Barnett & NBI
DESCRIPTION:Barnett Plumbing will share how they overcame barriers to heat pump adoption with their gas loaner program\, delivering the immediate need for hot water with a temporary gas loaner water heater until the right electrical work could be completed in the home to install a heat pump water heater. Visit our website to learn more about the Barnett Plumbing Quick Start Grant. \nNext\, New Buildings Institute (NBI) will discuss lessons learned with some of the newest technology on the market – 120-volt plug-in heat pump water heater. This lower voltage technology used in residential spaces could solve a big barrier to adoption because this technology can plug into an existing wall plug. Visit our website to learn more about the NBI Quick Start Grant.

SUMMARY:CLF Net Zero Buildings Week: Young Voices\, Big Impact
DESCRIPTION:All people deserve to have healthy and inspiring places to live\, work and learn. To construct the needed buildings and infrastructure AND meet global climate targets\, we will need to transform how\, what and when we build as well as the materials we use. Strong intersections between efforts to decarbonize energy\, decarbonize industry and decarbonize the building sector are increasingly recognized. With this heightened consciousness of embodied carbon in the built environment\, it is important to remember the role of the next generation in raising awareness and inspiring adoption of emerging best practices while exploring high-impact careers in the field. Join the Carbon Leadership Forum to hear from Troop 1477 of Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland\, the Carbon Zero Youth Initiative\, and a university level architecture student to hear about ways youth can support this movement and how building professionals and educators can empower young voices for change.

SUMMARY:Retrofit reality check: Overcome challenges and maximize opportunities in commercial and residential buildings
DESCRIPTION:We need to perform roughly 3.5 million deep energy retrofits per year to reach net zero emissions by 2050. People who deliver retrofits say it’s time for a reality check on what it takes to do the work. Facility managers are busy. Retrofits are costly and financing can be hard to find. Contractors need training that they might not always be able to access. Homes might need critical repair before an energy retrofit. Supply chain issues. Labor shortages. The list goes on. \nJoin subject matter experts from Slipstream and IFMA for a frank conversation with experts who work in residential and commercial buildings about what it will really take to rise to the retrofit challenge.

SUMMARY:Zero-Emission Appliance Standards Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for a virtual public workshop to provide input on CARB’s planning for the development of zero-emission appliance standards. These standards will seek to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from new space and water heaters sold to meet California’s climate goals and federal air quality standards. At this workshop\, staff will inform the public on why CARB will be developing zero-emission appliance standards and consult with the public about the key topics staff intend to analyze\, the planned engagement process\, and the values that would guide staff’s approach to developing the standards.

SUMMARY:MI Healthy Climate Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Michigan Department of Environment\, Great Lakes\, and Energy will host the first MI Healthy Climate Conference on April 11-12\, 2023\, at the Huntington Place in Detroit\, MI. \nMichigan faces real and costly impacts from climate change. But climate action also presents opportunities to improve health outcomes\, advance justice\, and grow Michigan’s economy. Governor Whitmer committed Michigan to carbon neutrality by 2050 and in April 2022 released the MI Healthy Climate Plan to chart Michigan’s path forward. Hundreds of Michiganders contributed thousands of hours of research\, reflection\, and conversation to create a plan that will protect our public health and the environment and help develop new clean energy jobs. \nIt will take concerted effort from all Michiganders to realize the Plan. Fortunately\, our communities\, businesses\, and institutions have already stepped up and created strong momentum for us to build upon. This two-day conference will bring together and mobilize engaged stakeholders\, community and business leaders\, advocates\, and other partners around implementing the key action items in the MI Healthy Climate Plan. Take this time to connect and help catalyze Michigan’s plan to action! \nGeneral Admission: $125 \nNon-profit/Student/Government Admission: $75 \nRegistration Deadline: March 31\, 2023
