SUMMARY:Heat Pump Deployment and Electric Construction: A Data-Driven Approach to Building Electrification
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to take a data-driven approach to improving our housing stock? In this session\, the speakers will distill insights from the Atlas Buildings Hub tool to provide key takeaways on the state of the electric HVAC environment in the United States. Using clear data visuals\, this presentation will seek to answer the following questions based on an analysis of the most recent EIA RECS and CBECS survey data: \n1. How many all-electric buildings are there in the United States? Where are they concentrated? \n2. What US regions have the largest share of electric heat pumps per capita? Which region is the most reliant on fossil fuels for primary space heating? Which fuels? \n3. How many households use electricity for cooking and water heating? Where are people most reliant on gas/fossil fuels for those end uses? \n4. Which regions are most reliant on fuel oil and propane for primary space heating? What regions are the most electrified in terms of household HVAC? What has been the change nationally and per region? \n5. # Of electrified households\, what share of them are equipped with modern heat pumps? What does the electric building stock look like in terms of equipment?

SUMMARY:Refrigerants and Codes: Understanding the Impact of Refrigerants Requirements on Building Codes and Standards on the Path to Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Kristen Taddonio\, Refrigerant Emissions Elimination Forum (REEF); Tom Deary\, Air-Conditioning\, Heating\, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); Aanchal Kohli\, California Air Resources Board (ARB). \nDescription: The pursuit of decarbonization of the U.S. economy by 2050 will take a multi-pronged approach. Increasing the mechanical efficiency requirements of equipment like air conditioners and water heaters is one way to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Another approach is by incentivizing the replacement of traditional refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. However\, several of the lowest-GWP refrigerant options have higher flammability or toxicity ratings\, and may require updated state and local building codes to enable usage. This session will provide an overview of how refrigerants are currently handled in codes and standards\, and explore what new changes and approaches could help overcome barriers to adoption of low-GWP refrigerants.

SUMMARY:RMI and National Grid Examine the Role of Non-Pipeline Alternatives in the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:As the United States strives to meet ambitious climate targets and transition to cleaner energy sources\, the changing role of natural gas utilities is paramount. With over 77 million customers receiving energy from gas utilities\, a shift away from fossil fuels is challenging but essential. In this webinar\, utility decarbonization experts from RMI\, National Grid\, and PG&E discuss the research findings from a recent RMI-National Grid joint report on the role of non-pipeline alternatives (NPAs) and integrated energy planning in shaping the energy transition.   \nNon-pipeline alternatives aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce costs by offering alternatives to traditional natural gas systems. These can include electrification of a building’s equipment or connection to lower-carbon infrastructure like thermal energy networks. National Grid and RMI’s research focused on nine case studies from the US and Europe that shed light on current efforts underway\, and what challenges must be addressed to advance this promising solution in step with better integrated energy planning by utilities.

SUMMARY:Marketing and Promoting Electrification Using Behavioral Science
DESCRIPTION:A new nationwide survey of nearly 2\,000 homeowners and renters found that among those interested in transitioning their homes from fossil fuels to efficient electric systems\, the most common reasons were the environment\, health and safety\, and energy efficiency. Perceptions of the expensiveness of switching to electricity and specific preferences about cooking with gas dominate the barriers to electrification. And customers with specific beliefs and experiences are most likely to switch. Putting these findings into practice is the real challenge. How do we encourage electrification more broadly using behavioral science? \nJoin us for a webinar as we delve into the details of this new report and discuss the findings with experts in the field. Attendees will learn about programs that have successfully moved households to electrify from Washington\, DC\, and the rest of the country.
