SUMMARY:Wildfire Advancing Science Partnerships for Indoor Reductions of Smoke Exposures (ASPIRE) Study
DESCRIPTION:Many communities throughout the US are routinely exposed to elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) in wildland fire smoke. A common public health message is for people to go indoors when outdoor PM levels are elevated. While PM infiltration in single family homes has been relatively well studied\, less is known about how much comes indoors in commercial and nonresidential buildings (such as libraries\, fitness centers\, and schools). To fill knowledge gaps on smoke infiltration and mitigation indoors\, EPA researchers worked with community partners in Montana and California on a multifaceted study called the Wildfire Advancing Science Partnerships for Indoor Reductions of Smoke Exposures (ASPIRE) Study. This study began in 2019 and examined wildfire smoke indoor air quality impacts in public spaces and innovative approaches to reduce wildfire smoke indoors. This presentation will provide an overview of study components and some of the key results.

This webinar will showcase findings from two projects seeking solutions for underserved market segments: an exploration of the technical barriers and opportunities of installing heat pump water heaters in manufactured housing\, and a framework for leveraging the green financing industry to fund retrofits. \nFeatured Projects:\n\nTesting Heat Pump Water Heaters in Manufactured Housing: Despite the potential energy savings and emissions reductions\, the adoption rate of heat pump water heaters in mobile and manufactured homes remains near zero. AESC will share insights from their efforts to install and evaluate the benefits of heat pump water heaters in manufactured homes through the Quick Start Grant program. The team will cover the pervasive barriers faced by these communities and recommendations for the needed regulatory changes\, technological innovation\, and collaborative efforts to unlock the potential of heat pump water heaters in these homes.\nScaling Heat Pump Retrofits in Housing with Cost Barriers: Climate Resolve & USGBC-CA aimed to promote residential electrification by addressing the financing gap for retrofits\, particularly for income-constrained households. The project explored opportunities to align measurement and verification protocols of heat pump installations with green finance standards and unlock new mechanisms for private investments. SUMMARY:Geothermal Heat Pumps
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 19th as we explore the world of Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs)\, a technology that uses the constant temperature of the shallow earth to provide heating and cooling. Because the ground can absorb excess heat during the summer and act as a heat source during the winter\, GHPs are extremely efficient—reducing energy consumption up to 44% compared to air source heat pumps and 72% compared to standard HVAC systems. \nWhile more costly to install\, GHPs offer greater longevity and stability than air source heat pumps\, and the additional costs may be returned in energy savings in just 5-10 years. We’ll discuss which climates and conditions are optimal for GHPs\, and how to decide if your property is a good fit.
