SUMMARY:RFF x Canary Media: Conversations on Electricity Affordability
DESCRIPTION:America has an electricity affordability problem: despite super-cheap solar and abundant natural gas\, the sheer demands of maintaining aging electrical poles and wires through increasingly extreme weather have pushed costs higher year after year. Tariffs\, trade wars\, and the potential repeal of clean-energy tax credits could make matters even worse. \nCanary Media’s Julian Spector will interview a panel of experts to talk about the most promising solutions to the electricity affordability crisis\, from building cheap\, clean energy and harnessing the power of distributed energy resources\, to modernizing the ways utilities charge their customers. \nPanelists \nJesse Buchsbaum\, Fellow\, Resources for the Future\nCharles Hua\, Founder and Executive Director\, Powerlines\nSapna Gheewala-Dowla\, Associate Vice President of Policy and Research\, Alliance to Save Energy\nJulian Spector\, Senior Reporter\, Canary Media (Moderator)

SUMMARY:EPA’s Flood Cleanup Resources: Promoting Community Resilience through Risk Communication
DESCRIPTION:After a flood\, affected residents often want to assess the condition of their homes and businesses\, get rid of debris and muck\, and repair damaged property—however\, flooded buildings contain potential health risks. Getting information to the public after a disaster about what these health risks are and how to avoid them can be difficult. EPA’s Office of Research Development and Region 4 (Southeast) used the EPA’s risk communication framework and human-centered design techniques to figure out what information people affected by a flood need and how they make cleanup decisions. They used this input to create a website on how to safely clean out and fix up flooded homes. The website contains short how-to videos with step-by-step instruction from safely entering a flooded building to mold remediation techniques. The public can use this website to reduce hazards in the home after a flooding event to protect their health. It helps communities recover as quickly and safely as possible. The webinar will review the risk communication and human-centered design strategies used to develop the Flooded Homes Cleanup Guidance website and provide an overview of the website and its key features.

SUMMARY:TECH Clean California Quarterly Stakeholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:TECH Clean California is a statewide initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of clean space and water heating technology across California homes. The initiative provides market incentives and workforce education and training to make it easier and cost-competitive for contractors to sell and install heat pump technology for residential replacement projects. TECH Clean California supports existing programs\, through matched incentive funding\, and extends incentives statewide with an emphasis on access for low-income and disadvantaged communities. The initiative’s activities\, which also include its pilot programs\, Quick Start Grants\, and public reporting website\, will help California further its goal of being carbon-neutral by 2045. \nHear what is happening with TECH Clean California and learn how you can take part in the initiative at the tenth quarterly Stakeholder Meeting. Energy Solutions\, the initiative’s implementer\, and our partners will provide an update of our activities\, timeline\, and opportunities for involvement. As part of TECH Clean California’s market transformation role\, we will also discuss cross-program coordination\, barriers to low-income customers’ access to incentives and their potential solutions.

SUMMARY:TECH Clean California Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) Program with Energy Solutions
DESCRIPTION:A 2025 PLMA Award of Excellence Winner\, TECH Clean California\, launched by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)\, promotes clean heating technologies through incentives for heat pump water heater (HPWH) installations. The program has funded over 11\,000 installations resulting in significant greenhouse gas savings. As of October 2023\, new mandates required that HPWH customers also enroll in demand response programs. To enable this\, the team provided additional education to contractors which has led to high enrollment rates and 91% customer satisfaction. In December 2024\, the contractors were asked to provide “proof of enrollment” for their installations which has continued to enhance program participation and contractor engagement. Today\, the HPWH contractors are evolving into demand response leaders in their own right. \nJoin us to learn about this program\, its results\, lessons learned\, and key take aways for the energy industry. Everyone welcome!

SUMMARY:Right-Sizing Water Distribution Pipes and Water Heating Systems to Save Energy and Reduce Building Costs
DESCRIPTION:This CARD webinar will review results from 2050 Partners’ study which validates an alternative pipe sizing method\, the Uniform Plumbing Code Appendix M “Peak Water Demand Calculator” (WDC)\, based on findings from four residential multifamily buildings in Minnesota. Currently adopted and available to use in other jurisdictions’ plumbing codes\, discover how this field study starts to shed light on the potential benefits of right-sizing piping in Minnesota multifamily buildings and resulting energy efficiency and construction cost reductions. \nAs Minnesota advances its efforts to decarbonize water heating – primarily through increased adoption of heat pump water heaters – this webinar will also share insights on how right-sizing piping can support right-sizing water heating systems in an effort to further reduce costs and improve efficiency. Last\, learn about how this work can support and inform ECO programs in Minnesota.

SUMMARY:Go Go\, Stop Stop! Charging up and curtailing HPWHs to minimize costs and maximize clean energy uptake
DESCRIPTION:With their ability to use energy flexibly and act as small thermal batteries\, heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) can “charge” during off-peak times with cheaper\, cleaner electricity – doing so saves homeowners money and reduces grid congestion and emissions. In this session\, we’ll examine key takeaways from HPWH load shifting studies and programs in 2025 and where the building industry is headed.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Multistate Action Plan
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, nine states signed the Multistate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Accelerate the Transition to Zero-Emission Residential Buildings. Citing the need to reduce climate and air pollution\, the MOU set a target for zero-emission heat pumps to make up 65% of the collective MOU state space and water heating market by 2030\, and 90% by 2040. Those states have since been joined by Washington\, DC\, and Washington state.\n\nThis webinar will provide an overview of the Multistate Action Plan to Accelerate the Transition to Zero-Emission Residential Buildings. Released in September\, the Action Plan provides over 50 recommendations to help states improve access to affordable clean heat. Participants will learn about the recommendations and hear directly from states on how they are working to advance zero-emission residential buildings. Speakers include Emily Levin\, Director of Policy and Programs at NESCAUM\, Liz Reichart\, Deputy Director of Building Decarbonization at the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources\, and Emily Salzberg\, Managing Director for Clean Buildings at the Washington Department of Commerce.
