SUMMARY:Understanding Clean Heat Standards – What Is the Lay of the Land?
DESCRIPTION:A Clean Heat Standard seeks to reduce and regulate emissions from natural gas\, fuel oil\, and propane distributors by creating a cap-and-trade mechanism. A unique aspect of a Clean Heat Standard is its creation of a performance based Clean Heat Credit market where companies earn credits through actions such as efficiency upgrades or installing cold climate heat pumps. In this Better Buildings Residential Network peer exchange call\, learn more about this mechanism\, how it works\, and where it’s going.

SUMMARY:Catalyst Communities Webinar - Fundamentals of Energy Savings Performance Contracting in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) offers states\, localities\, public infrastructure\, and institutional facilities an opportunity to finance energy efficiency investments by leveraging the energy\, water and operational cost savings that projects achieve over time. While ESPC projects have already financed over $50 billion in energy-saving investments\, estimates by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory show there could be over $300 billion in additional cost-effective ESPC projects nationally. Facilities such as state and municipal buildings\, universities\, K-12 schools\, and hospitals\, as well as highway\, street\, and parking lot lighting are particularly well suited to these investments. This webinar will gather key stakeholders for ESPC projects throughout Michigan with a particular emphasis on reaching underserved communities\, provide an overview of how to apply this financing mechanism in Michigan\, and hear from facility managers who have implemented these projects.

SUMMARY:Energy equity: Bringing the benefits of our fight against climate change to frontline communities
DESCRIPTION:As climate change brings more devastating impacts to the Southwest\, it’s more important than ever to include low-income and frontline communities in climate action plans. We will not reach our climate goals if we do not include this large segment of the population in these strategic plans. More importantly\, frontline communities are often the first to feel the impacts of global warming and the group to experience the worst of those impacts. It is vital that we focus on inclusion of these communities in all of SWEEP’s carbon reduction work. \nIn this webinar\, SWEEP’s Tammy Fiebelkorn and New Mexico Representative Kristina Ortez will discuss this important focus and highlight program and policy examples that assist low-income communities to reduce carbon emissions\, reduce their energy costs\, and improve public health. \nRepresentative Ortez and Tammy work together on a variety of programs and policies to fight climate change and help frontline communities. They created and received legislative approval for the Community Energy Efficiency Development Block Grant Act in New Mexico which provides energy burden reductions for frontline communities via energy efficiency and beneficial electrification; and they also passed legislation providing tax credits\, which double for low-income people\, for improving the energy efficiency of homes.

SUMMARY:NEEP Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Designed for attendees to benefit from shared knowledge and experience of those who have “been there”\, case study sessions include presentations coupled with an extended audience Q&A segment. There are three case studies: \nACE in the Hole: Shared Energy Managers\nNot having a full-time energy manager doesn’t have to be a hindrance for communities. There is an alternative: shared energy managers. This case study will highlight the Achieving Community Efficiency (ACE) project\, a multi-year DOE-funded project where several communities worked together to share an energy manager. Join us to discuss the benefits of this type of program and how to set one up. \nThe ABCs of K-12 Retrofits\nThe American Society of Civil Engineers gave America’s public K-12 infrastructure a D+ in its 2021 Report Card. Many communities don’t have adequate budget or staff to properly maintain\, update\, or replace school buildings\, but this case study will highlight successful examples of existing school projects that address health and energy improvements. Join us for tips on becoming the teacher’s pet as new federal dollars become available for school retrofit projects that prioritize underserved communities. \nState Plans for Impact\nState leaders discuss their high-level plans for utilizing funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for energy efficiency\, economic development\, electrification and equity. Focus will be on the $62 billion to be administered by the Department of Energy\, but plans for Department of Transportation or other programs will also be addressed.

SUMMARY:Unearthing potential: The value of geothermal energy to US decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to join the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center for a panel about the value of US geothermal energy to decarbonization on Friday\, March 18th\, from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM EST. This public\, virtual event will convene key stakeholders to discuss opportunities for geothermal energy to play a significant role in US emissions reductions\, as well as avenues for the US government to assist in the sector’s growth. \nAchieving US climate goals requires the development and widespread deployment of all available clean energy solutions. Geothermal energy\, while currently only a marginal component of the US energy economy\, can contribute significantly to the climate action effort. It has the potential to support deep decarbonization through clean baseload generation\, efficient heating and cooling\, lithium co-production\, and a host of other applications. \nHowever\, current policy towards geothermal energy has\, thus far\, prevented the emergence of a vibrant market that would stimulate sector growth. To realize the potential of geothermal energy\, public- and private-sector leaders must support policies that encourage geothermal industries and address regulatory\, technical\, and economic barriers.

SUMMARY:Innovative Partnerships: Collaborating for Community Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:Complex issues require collaborative solutions. The third and final session in NEEP’s Low-Carbon Retrofit Solutions webinar series will provide examples of innovative and equitable solutions for community decarbonization. Leaders in Pennsylvania\, Vermont\, and North Carolina are working to address these issues by facilitating intake processes for safety and efficiency upgrades through collaborative partnerships. Weatherizing a home offers various benefits but is often times hindered by existing health and safety issues like asbestos\, mold\, and lead. This is especially true in older housing stock where safety issues must be addressed before efficiency improvements can be made. By leveraging partnerships around a continued commitment to advance the interconnection of health\, homes\, and energy\, these issues can be addressed and lead to a more equitable and inclusive future. \nRegister for the event here

SUMMARY:The Future of Gas Utilities
DESCRIPTION:The Brattle Group will host a two-day virtual symposium\, “The Future of Gas Utilities\,” which will explore the role natural gas utilities can play in the transition to a decarbonized future. \nThe natural gas utility industry is facing increased uncertainty and risk in the current environment of decarbonizing the energy sector. With approximately $150–180 billion of unrecovered gas distribution infrastructure at risk\, gas utilities will need to organize and become proactive and innovative participants in a clean energy transition. \nDrawing from the topics covered in Brattle’s Future of Gas Utilities Series\, the symposium will feature experts from across the US. They will explore the risks and opportunities facing natural gas utilities\, examine strategies to navigate the transition\, and discuss the implementation of regulatory pathways and changes to the traditional business model.
